Analysis of Common Concrete Cracking Problems by Goodcrete

During the process of construction and use, there are many reasons for causing construction concrete structures cracking. When there is temperature and humidity change, structures loaded, foundation settled unevenly and improper construction methods, it is very easy to have cracks. In the following, there are the detailed reasons:

1.Structure Design
Reason: When the design isn’t considered comprehensively, it will easily cause stress concentration and improper structure gaps. Result: The concrete cracks.

2.Foundation Deformation
Reason:The construction foundation settles unevenly, so the stress of foundation deformation is relatively large. Result:The concrete cracks, and the cracks are generally penetrating and have greater harm.

3.Aggregate and Solid Particles Sink
Reason: The concrete inherent bleeding property and the solid particles obstacle in varying degrees when they are sunk lead the uneven sink.
Result: The concrete has formed sink cracks in the process of shaping.

4.Surface Water Too Fast Evaporation
Reason:After the concrete is poured, it is caused by too fast evaporation in the process of shaping. Result:There are many cracks, which are irregular shapes, different lengths and widths, crack-like and less than 50 mm depth.

5.Temperature Stress
Reason: After the concrete is poured, the heat from cement and water accumulates and doesn’t easily send out. So it makes the concrete form greater temperature difference between inside and outside, and it leads too large tensile stress on the surface. Result: The cracks on the surface of concrete are almost irregular shapes and shallower depth.

6.Structure Loaded
Reason:The concrete components are loaded in the process of construction and use, such as shocked in the early days, overload construction and too large stress.
Result:The concrete can form the cracks, which aren’t easy to be seen.

7. Temperature & Humidity Change
Reason: As the materials have thermal expansion and contraction properties, various parts of houses will generate different deformations. And it will cause mutual constraints and generate the stress.

Result:If the components aren't maintained well in the early days, they easily form the contraction cracks and thermal cacks.

8. Concrete Internal Reason
Reason:It has too high gas content and the quality of air-entraining agent is poor. It is so viscous that the bubble is difficult to be discharged when it is vibrated. It has generated segregation and bleeding. 
Result:There are voids and pits on the surface of concrete structure.

9.Cracks Caused by the Quality of Construction
Reason: Improper construction technique is a main reason to cause the concrete cracking.

10.Concrete is made of cement, sand and aggregate mixing with water or admixture. If the quality of the materials used in the concrete is poor, it will cause the structure cracking.

Influence of Water on Concrete Structure
A: The influence of water on the concrete performance is mainly realized by the influence of water cement ratio on the concrete intensity.

1.“The same mixing ratio”: The smaller the water cement ratio, the higher the concrete intensity, the smaller the concrete mobility, the smaller slump and the worse workability. On the contrary, the bigger the water cement ratio, the lower the concrete intensity, the bigger the concrete mobility, the bigger slump and the better workability.

2.In the condition of the amount of cement and aggregate unchanging, if the water cement ratio increases, the mobility of cement slurry will increase, the mobility of mixture will also increase. On the contrary, it will reduce. But if the water cement ratio is too big, the cohesiveness and water-reserving property will be bad. If the water cement ratio is too small, the mobility of mixture will be too low and it will affect the construction.

B: The harm of water to the concrete
1. In the phase of concrete hardening, it will produce gas, so there will be countless pores and capillaries inside.

2. In the phase of concrete initial setting, it will produce hydroxide and will be left in the matrix. When this kind of alkaline substance touches with moisture, it will harm the concrete.

● Enhances the absorption of dirt.

● The concrete is weathering and its function loses because of the moisture.

● Enhances the concrete absorption of chloride in the desalination substances.

● Dissolves & activates the alkali substance, which can destroy the concrete.

● Accelerates the corrosion of reinforcing steel bars.

● Leads the concrete cracking because of the freeze and thaw cycles.

● Reduces the adhesion of other coatings and the concrete matrix.
